Restore Trust

The look-out at Bolt Head

Dear Editor,

With regard to strange actions by the National Trust, may I mention the totally ridiculous destruction of a piece of our wartime history, the look out station high on the cliff top at Bolt Head on the western side of the Salcombe estuary.

This building, a reminder of wartime activities, was a purely functional concrete structure, but was to me an evocative reminder of the lonely lives of those posted there on the cliff keeping watch over the sea.

For no apparent reason this structure was completely removed without trace, which I found disconcerting when walking the coastal path, and not being sure of my position in its absence.

I had previously always stopped there during my walks.

Apart from anything else, it must have cost a vast sum to so thoroughly remove all trace of it, and there did not appear to be any consultation about the action.

This was done over 10 years ago, not sure of date.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Boll
